You want your smile to look as natural as possible. Dental crowns may be just the solution. You can think of a crown as a little tooth-shaped “cap” that protects your teeth from additional damage while restoring your ability to talk and chew. A dental crown resembles your natural tooth so perfectly that onlookers shouldn’t be able to tell that it isn’t the “real thing.”

Our Process & Timeline
At My Family Dental in Clawson, MI, we believe in being transparent with our patients regarding treatment timelines. A dental crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate impressions that will be used to create your custom crown. The impression will also be used to create a temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until the final product is completed. All of our dental crowns are fabricated at an off-site dental laboratory using high-quality materials.
While your tooth is numb, your dentist will prepare it by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the dental crown properly. Once these tasks are accomplished, your temporary tooth crown will be placed with temporary cement. At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed to make room for the final product. Once your natural tooth has been cleaned, your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

Dental crowns are customizable caps or coverings that go over teeth that are cracked or have other types of damage. They can be made to look like your natural tooth, depending on where it is located, what materials are used, and what you want it to look like. Some dental crowns are made of porcelain or resin, while others are made from gold or porcelain fused to metal.
Various factors, including where it is placed in your mouth, determine how long a crown may last. Some tooth crowns will last a lifetime, while others may crack and need to be restored at some point. On average, dental crowns last 5-15 years with proper care.
Due to their customizable nature, dental crowns can be applied to teeth of various shapes and sizes. If you only have a limited amount of your natural tooth left, composite resin can be added to build a base for the crown.
Dental crowns can also replace missing teeth when used alongside a dental implant in your jaw. If you’re not sure whether you’re a candidate for dental crowns, we can discuss your options with you as part of your initial consultation.
